SAWEF Press Release No Embargo – 4 July 2013

The South African Water, Energy & Food Forum announces Youth Ambassador to carry nexus message to future leaders

A Parktown Girls grade 12 pupil, Johara Naidoo, one of Generation Earth’s promising young leaders and member of its water steering committee, has been chosen as the South African Water, Energy & Food Forum’s Youth Ambassador for the 2013/14 year. She will be formally inducted at the upcoming SA Water, Energy & Food Forum hosted at Montecasino on July 30th.

As SAWEF Youth Ambassador Johara will carry a clear message to the Youth of South Africa:

“The water-energy-food nexus will determine the sustainability of our future – these three sectors are critically interconnected and a possible crisis in any of them will directly affect the other two. It is crucial to plan our political, social and economic activities with respect to its fragile balance. You, the youth of this miraculous country, inspired by the heroic and altruistic leadership of Nelson Mandela, have the ability to steer South Africa in a direction that is sustainable and socially beneficial for every citizen.”

The water-energy-food nexus also presents a green and golden opportunity to make inroads into the looming social crisis in South Africa, youth unemployment.

A youth unemployment accord was signed on 18 April in Soweto by the Government, organised labour, organised business and community and youth formations as “social partners”.

Emerging from this historic occasion is the coordinated “youth employment strategy”, or YES, at is acronymically known. There will be youth target set asides in particular industries and accordingly young people should make up 60% of the labour intake in the green economy.

Johara will be at the forefront of highlighting the growing opportunities for young people to get involved in the green economy.

The take home message that the SAWEF Youth Ambassador will be carrying with her during her time as leader of Generation Earth and SAWEF Youth Ambassador is that the youth of this country have the potential, energy and social awareness to help mould the sustainable future South Africa that they envisage.
